A baseball player, he graduated magna cum laude from the University of California at Davis, and as a left-handed pitcher was named to the Academic All-American baseball team and Outstanding College Athletes of America. After taking a year to dig swimming pools and work construction jobs before enrolling in law school, in 1977 he graduated magna com laude from the University of Santa Clara Law School, later founding the law firm of Crawford & Block (and its predecessor firms). From 1987 to 1995, he was an active member of the Sacramento County Bar, serving as director, vice president, and president of the Sacramento chapter of the Consumer Attorneys of California. Wanting more time to spend with his family, Jim joined JAMS, a dispute resolution service, in 1996. In 11 years, he successfully mediated more than 2000 diverse cases in Northern California(including victims of a 1992 shooting rampage that killed 4 people and wounded 10 at Lindhurst High School in Olivehurst). Jim's family and friends will remember his loyalty, his great sense of humor, his sound advice, and his enduring love of baseball, books, and fly fishing.
